2025.07.03 [Report] SSS&ISE Interdisciplinary Matching Workshop 2025 Spring was held.
Super Smart Society Promotion Consortium holds matching workshops twice a year, providing a platform for students to present their research findings and ideas, with the aim of matching them with the needs of consortium partners.
This time, as a first step toward achieving the goals of the Super Smart Society Promotion Project 2.0 — namely, fostering future talent to lead a super smart society and creating new industries through organic collaboration among academia, industry, and government; and expanding beyond conventional fields such as science, engineering, and informatics to include areas like medicine, dentistry, and nursing, thereby promoting the practice of convergence science through interdisciplinary integration — two consortiums under the Institute of New Industry Incubation, the Super Smart Society Promotion Consortium (SSS) and the InfoSyEnergy Research and Education Consortium (ISE), jointly held a workshop.
In addition to students and faculty from the science and engineering fields, students from the medical and dental fields, as well as those from Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, also participated, making the workshop a highly successful event.
This workshop was designed as a venue for presentations and dialogue with a focus on the new vision of Science Tokyo, ‘Visionary Initiatives (VI)’, announced in April 2025.

Seeds Round

Following the opening ceremony, the Seeds Round began with 58 students presenting their research findings, divided into two sessions.
Although the poster presentations took place in two separate venues, participants energetically moved around the sites, referring to handouts that detailed the exhibits. Lively and earnest discussions were held in various areas throughout the event.
Needs Round

In the Needs Round, Partners introduced their initiatives and displayed actual equipment at individual booths.
Each partner’s representatives responded attentively to students’ inquiries, sharing insights based on their own experiences as well as the materials they had brought with them. In the post-event survey, students commented that they had had more time to interact with the partner representatives. The feedback suggested that many students were especially drawn to the opportunity for direct interaction with the companies.
Networking

The networking part commenced in a casual and friendly atmosphere, following a toast offered by Mr. Imai of NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories (STRL).
The tables were arranged according to 7 discussion themes, — ‘Smart Infrastructure and Maintenance’, ‘Energy’, ‘Smart Nursing’, ‘Social & Human Science’, ‘Ocean’, ‘Smart Agriculture’, ‘To be a WISE-SSS, ISE student’ — allowing participants to engage in discussions while enjoying light refreshments.
Best seed award ceremony

Finally, based on the votes cast by partners, an award ceremony was held to recognize 6 students for their outstanding presentations.
After the award recipients gave their acceptance speeches with joy, we received closing remarks on the workshop from Mr.Hamasaki of Deloitte Tohmatsu Consulting LLC. The event concluded on a high note, with active participation and great success.
Voices
[Student Voices]
“This workshop was a valuable experience for me. Engaging directly with the partners proved highly rewarding, and I hope to build on this opportunity through a collaborative research project.”
“I hope that more students and companies from the medical and life sciences fields can be involved. With the recent university integration, hosting the event in Yushima campus could encourage greater participation from the medical and dental faculties, potentially leading to deeper interdisciplinary collaboration.”
“The workshop was well-organized, timely, and conducted with professionalism. The communication and advance sharing of presentation materials were extremely helpful in preparing effectively for the event.”
“Overall, it was a valuable opportunity to engage with different research groups and explore potential collaborations.”
[Partner Voices]
“This year, the event welcomed students from other universities as well, and with an expanded venue, it was particularly impressive to see an even broader range of presentation topics than in previous years.”
“I was deeply moved to see how earnestly company representatives listened to the students’ presentations and how they were actively seeking new possibilities for collaboration. I felt that providing opportunities like this for students is meaningful and valuable.”
The workshop turned out to be a highly rewarding experience for both partners and students.
We will continue to create opportunities to foster new collaborations among industry, government, and academia.
