Biological research and an electrical manufacturer: Discovery of connection points between different disciplines

Kana SASAMOTO

School of Life Science and Technology, Department of Life Science and Technology
Workshop participated: 2022 Spring (D2/At the time of participation)

Profile
Born in 1996 in Kanagawa Province, Tokyo. Came to Japan in 2019 after graduating from a university in Tokyo. Completed his master’s degree in Tokyo institute at the Department of Life Science and Technology in School of Life Science and Technology in 2021. Currently, he is a 3nd year student in Tokyo institute at the Department of Life Science and Technology in School of Life Science and Technology.

Going beyond one's own research field: Interactions with a variety of collaborating companies

At the SSS Matching Workshop, I was able to meet not only other researchers in my own field, but also multiple participating companies. In the Seeds Round (with student presentations), I was also able to hear the ideas and opinions of researchers in other fields. Through this discussion, I learned that Yokogawa Electric Corporation is conducting research in biotechnology and other fields, and then during the Needs Round (with companies presentations), I visited their company’s booth and learned more details. On the following day, they also provided a meeting site for technical interactions with their personnel in charge.

Through an internship, links were made with a broad number of persons in related researches and businesses, stimulating the intern's research activities

After the Matching Workshop, I attended two technical exchange meetings, where we enjoyed deep and rich discussions about research contents on both sides. These meetings stimulated my desire to learn more about the research at Yokogawa Electric Corp., and they assigned me an internship post at their firm.

In my job-search activities up until then, I had thought that my researching skills would only be attractive to a chemicals or pharmaceuticals manufacturer. My internship allowed me to realize that electrical manufacturers also need human resources in biological fields, so now I know that we should all broaden our potential employment search targets.

At the Tokyo Tech Academy for Super Smart Society, we had further strengthening of friendships and findings in different fields

I registered for the Tokyo Tech Academy for Super Smart Society to learn about different fields that could be fused with my own specialty. I have learned many things from the curriculum, including the fundamentals of quantum computing. I have a strong sense of how I can integrate such specialty knowledge with my own field of biology.

At the SSS Matching Workshop, I was able to hold discussions with a wide variety of companies, organizations, and students. We shared our research in our specialist fields. These interactions certainly broadened my world view and my practical knowledge. I was also able to learn about companies interested in my research field. I recommend that everyone take advantage of these special opportunities by participating in an SSS Matching Workshop and using other SSS services!

Message from the supervising professor

Ms. Sasamoto has broadened her horizons through research in two fields: organic chemistry as an undergraduate and protein engineering as a master's and doctoral student, and the SSS Matching Workshop gave her the opportunity to further broaden her horizons through discussions with corporate researchers in different fields and internships. Thanks to this experience, she is now active in our laboratory as a talented person who can generate cross-disciplinary ideas, and we can see that this was very meaningful for her. I recommend this workshop to everyone as an opportunity to broaden your possibilities and horizons through an unexpected match. (Associate Professor Kitaguchi, School of Life Science and Technology)

Message from the consortium partner

Ms. Sasamoto was interested in a variety of fields. The content of this internship was also outside her field of study, but she was very proactive about it. She also thought about how she could apply it to her own research. I would be very happy if the internship gave her the opportunity to broaden her research. Although it was only a short period of time, I think she was able to learn about some aspects of research and development in a company through patent searches and interaction with employees. I also got a lot of inspiration from her curiosity and hard work. Thank you very much. (Ms.Kurokawa, Yokogawa Electric Corporation)
