<Keynote Speech 2>(Online) “Metaverse-ready wireless networks” ~The evolution of the fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks toward 6G mostly aims to introduce an experience-rich (i.e., extended reality (XR)) digitalization of industrial services. On the other hand, the ongoing definition and development of metaverse spaces as the foundation of the next-generation internet are driven by media and social platform industries (e.g., Meta, Microsoft, etc.) and mostly target consumer markets such as gaming, e-commerce, real estate, shopping, tourism, etc. The concept of metaverse empowers geographically distant users to enjoy realistic and spatially-aware experiences that seamlessly blend virtual content into users’ physical worlds. The metaverse is defined as a future virtual environment with social and economic elements reflecting human reality, where users interact with the environment and each other while engaging with digital assets and property. The metaverse redefines the utilization of digital and physical connectivity infrastructure to empower a fully immersive internet. The three building blocks of the next-generation internet are Metaverse spaces, Devices, and Web 3.0. Together they will define Mulsemedia (i.e., Multi-Sensory media) communications as a foundation for communicating immersive experiences with human senses (i.e., sights, hearing, touch, smell, and taste). This talk aims at shedding a light on the opportunities and challenges with this fundamental change in networking technologies. We provide an overview of ongoing digitalization efforts reflected through the adoption of XR, digital-twin, and artificial intelligence technologies within the 6G Research Hub – 6GEM – project. Next, we will look into the future and discuss the design challenges of next-generation ICT systems to support the full connectivity of metaverse spaces (immersive service spaces). We summarize with an integration example of XR-based control and management of the wireless network. The talk provokes new coming challenges and unveils interesting future directions across multi-disciplinary research areas.~Haris Gačanin Professor, RWTH Aachen University Project Coordinator, 6GEM |

<Keynote Speech 3>(Online) “The Role of Digital Twins: an Implementation Perspective” ~Digital Twins are becoming a mainstay in terms of planning, engineering, systems integration, construction, commissioning, and operations of the modern networked world in which we live. One should look to the patterns in nature to provide scale and resiliency in providing critical infrastructure services. Mass customization originated here in Japan, and it is the route of all success in providing speed to markets and comfort for your users. The team of teams is providing a “Blue Ocean Strategy” in terms of proliferating the secure supply chain with distributed applications.~John Reynolds Digital Twin Consortium – Co-Chairman, Natural Resources Working Group |
